Mrs Howarth's Phonics Group

Good morning.

This is our last phonics lesson for this week.

I will send certificates out to anybody who has completed each of this weeks activities and sent it to me or messaged me. Don't worry if you are on catch up over the weekend, you won't miss out!

Friday 15th January

Today’s phonics focus sound is ‘ew’. This is a new phase 5 sound that we haven’t covered in school yet. This is another grapheme that can make 2 different sounds. It can say ‘oo’ and ‘yoo’. The action for ‘ew’ with the ‘oo’ sound is to hold one hand flat and with the other hand pretend you are holding a screw driver and are screwing a screw into the wood (your hand). The action for ‘ew’ with the yoo sound is to put one arm on your hip, as if you are holding a big mixing bowl of stew, and with your other hand give it a stir.

1. Let’s start with a game. Can you help phonics frog make it home? Tap the screen or click the mouse to jump across the road without getting hit by traffic. Cross the river by jumping onto lily pads, alligators and floating logs. Alligator tails are safe, but not their mouths. Click on the link below.

2. Next watch the video for todays sound ‘ew’.

3. Finally complete the ‘ew’ worksheet. I have set it as the online version. Work from left to right, top to bottom when sorting the words into the table. Click on the link below.

4. I have attached an optional wordsearch for ew words.

Phonics is a crucial skill for your child. Please ensure that these activities are completed independently, although they may help to understand what to do, they must read and write the sounds by themselves in order to practise these crucial skills. At this stage we do not expect that words are spelled correctly, but are spelled phonetically.
