Precision Teaching

What is precision teaching?

Precision teaching is an intervention that takes place for 5 minutes regularly on a one to one basis. It is a fast paced intervention where children practice skills over and over until they become fluent. Precision teaching interventions cover reading, spelling and maths (number knowledge).

Precision Maths

Precision maths focusses on children knowledge of number, beginning with learning to count and identify numbers before moving on to number bonds and times tables. It builds on children’s skills so that they become fluent with number knowledge and are able to apply it to other areas of maths.

Precision Reading

Precision reading teaches children to read on sight for fluency. Children learn to read one new word at a time whilst continuing to rehearse their previously taught words. This intervention teaches children to read on sight rather than having to sound out every word. This aids the children with their reading fluency and therefore improves their comprehension. This intervention also builds the children’s confidence in reading as they learn to read quickly.

Precision Spelling

Precision spelling focusses on the words that the individual child struggles with and teaches them to spell these words accurately. Children learn one new word at a time whilst continuing to practice previously taught words. This builds their confidence with spelling and therefore writing and is proven to improve children’s spelling.

How can parents/carers help at home?

At home, parents/carers can help by practicing the words/spellings or number facts that the children are working on in the sessions. If you speak to the class teacher, they will be able to tell you what they need to practice.
