History

"The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future."

- Theodore Roosevelt.

Through the History Curriculum at Astley St Stephen’s CE Primary School, we strive to inspire a curiosity within our children. We aim to develop an understanding of British history and that of the wider world. We work to develop an understanding of chronology as well as a knowledge and understanding of how the local area and the world has changed over time. The children are given the opportunity to examine, interpret and evaluate a variety of sources in order to make deductions about the past and ignite their curiosity. They are taught to think and behave as historians and archaeologists, by thinking critically, posing their own historical questions and weighing up evidence. This helps them to develop perspective and judgement to discern how and why interpretations of the past have been constructed. Children will learn why the world has changed and what they can learn from the past to make the future a better place. This includes understanding the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as how the past may have shaped their own identities.
